Wendell Berry is one of my favorite poets, and The Country of Marriage is one of my favorite books of poetry. Berry is not Shakespeare. His poetry is not filled with drama, thunder, and lightning. Rather, there is a common vein of gold that integrates with life as we really live it in his poems.
Wendell E. Berry is an American novelist, poet, environmental activist, cultural critic, and farmer. A prolific author, he has written many novels, short stories, poems, and essays.
Berry points out in his essay, Poetry and Marriage, that fidelity, standing by our word, is a double fidelity: to the community and to oneself. Only within the community can we achieve our end to know and love others; within the community one is at once free and a member.
Wendell Berry (b. 1934) is a visionary, poet, author, and activist, born to a farming family in Henry County, Kentucky. The eldest of four children, Berry grew up in a tobacco-growing community and aspired to become a farmer early in life.
